About the Wilderness Task Force:

Wilderness was first officially recognized as an IUCN protected area category in 1994, when the WCPA took the important step of establishing Category 1(b) – Wilderness in its system of protected area categories. The World Conservation Union’s (IUCN) Wilderness Task Force was established by the IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) in 2003, and convened for the first time that same year at the Vth World Parks Congress in Durban, South Africa, where the Wilderness Task Force convened two meetings. The Wilderness Task Force is chaired by Vance G. Martin, President, The WILD Foundation, and Khulani Mkhize, CEO, KwaZulu Natal Wildlife, South Africa. The Wilderness Task Force secretariat is located at The WILD Foundation’s headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, U.S.A.
